Lonnie Holley was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Since the airport authorities took away his property, he has moved to Harpersville, Alabama, East of Birmingham. He lives there with five of his fifteen children. He spent most of his youth in foster homes and reform schools. His first artworks were carvings made from industrial sandstone. In addition, he paints and makes assemblages of cast-off metal and other materials. His work is highly thematic and centers on the human condition. Holley is written about frequently, and his work appears in numerous exhibitions, most recently at the Birmingham Museum of Art.
