Myrtice West
The University of Memphis exhibition “Revelation: The Paintings of Myrtice West” features the work of a self-directed folk and visionary artist from Alabama, Myrtice West (b. 1923), who lives in he’s small town of Centre in the northeast section of the states. The thirteen paintings of the “Revelation” series were inspired by the last chapter of the New Testament. Revelation is the work of the late first century apocalyptic writer John, often identified as the beloved disciple and the author of the Fourth Gospel. The “Revelation” paintings were begun in the late 1970s and completed in the course of about seven years. The series begin with the first chapter of Revelation, moves sequentially through it, and ends with the vision of the Marriage of the Lamp and the New Jerusalem described in the book’s final chapters.
